Binôme – Technical Translation

FRANÇAIS  |   ENGLISH  |   ESPAÑOL
Francis Ponge

The literary projects
These literary projects have been inspired by Henri Meschonnic's book Poétique du traduire, and Douglas Hofstadter's book Le Ton beau de Marot. My aim is to render constrained texts in French while keeping as much as possible the rhythm and language-dependant constraints that are present within the English source text. The objective is thus to translate form, content and function in order to achieve text equivalence for the reader at a global level.

These translations therefore try to meet the challenge of being both a faithful and relatively literal, recreations that flow as naturally as possible in the target language in order to give a taste of what the English original works might be like to unilingual French-speaking people, and this, without any recourse to explanations, footnotes or highly exotic borrowed words.

You will find below some translation examples and samples. A translation of Mark Dunn's book Ella Minnow Pea is well underway.

FABLE
Francis Ponge

Par le mot par commence ce texte
Dont la première ligne dit la vérité,
Mais ce tain sous l'une et l'autre
Peut-il être toléré ?
Cher lecteur déjà tu vois
Là de nos difficultés...

(A P R È S 7 ans de malheurs,
Elle brisa son miroir.).

  TALE
  Francis Ponge

With the word with begins the present text
Whose very first line is telling the truth,
But, can this silver under one
And the other be put up with?
Dear reader, you already see
Whence our difficulties cometh...

(A F T E R 7 years of misery,
She broke her mirror.)
