The etymological origin of the French word "binôme" (in English "binomial") derives from the prefix bi— ("two") and the Greek word onoma ("name" or "term"), hence the link with translation, which is a relation between two terms expressing, in context, one and the same idea.

Incidentally, the word binomial also has precise uses in some scientific fields, namely in mathematics, where a binomial is an expression composed of two monomials, and also in biology, where taxonomy classifies the living organisms according to the system of Carl von Linné by the means of two Latin names that constitute binomials.

The owner and main translator of the company, Marie-Claude Plourde, can work from three languages — French, English and Spanish — and translate into the two official languages. She possesses a bachelor's degree in translation from the Université de Montréal and a college diploma in mechanical engineering from the Cégep de Sherbrooke, both obtained with honours.

Marie-Claude Plourde is a Certified Translator, which means she is a registered member of the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ), for the provision of translation services into both French and English.

Binôme usually utilizes the translation memory Wordfast, which is compatible with Trados, in order to do an automatic word count of the text to translate. This database also helps to ensure a minimal level of consistency in the terminology used over time for a given client.

Binôme translates technical documents into French and English, from texts using a jargon specific to a field and aimed at a specialized public, to texts presenting a technical content popularized for a general public. Not only does Binôme translate in the scientific and technical fields, but it also translates administrative documents and texts of general subject matter, and offers you other linguistic services such as:

Since its creation in 2004, Binôme mainly translates technical documents for engineering firms, mines, manufacturing companies, university-based research groups, advertising agencies and, occasionally, other translation firms.

On a more personal note, the translator and owner also takes interest in the translation of literary texts, especially highly constrained texts on several levels, for instance texts in which the form and structure contribute to the overall meaning. Poetry is a good example of such challenging texts when it comes to translation. She also attempts at writing dense poems where sonorities and meaning are intimately tied together, making their translation especially difficult, if not impossible.
